Excellent vacuum cleaner

In May 2010, I found a Bissell 3596 vacuum cleaner standing by the dumpster of my apartment complex. Not inside, but standing upright beside it. When items are placed outside the dumpsters, sometimes they are still useful. The vacuum looked to be in good condition and intact with all accessories present. I presume by now it would be a few years old, had some experience and any problems would be apparent. I thought the motor might be blown, but it might be reparable. So I took a chance and brought it home.
Much to my surprise, when I hit the switch, it came on. The motor ran and the beater brush spun. Even the light illuminated. So, I took the thing apart and cleaned all the filters, dirt cup and all the nooks and crannies. It was only moderately dirty, so clean-up was easy. All except the hepa filter are washable, and that one I was able to improve by vacuuming it but it will need to be replaced soon. After drying overnight, I started vacuuming the carpet. I then found that the beater brush was stalling out, even when on the highest pile setting. I read the other reviews that were very clear that when this condition occurs, the drive belt needs to be replace. So off to Lowe's where two generic aftermarket replacement belts (Style 7) cost a grand total of $2.87 plus tax. Replacing the belt is generally straightforward, but a little tricky. The user manual is online as a PDF file and very helpful to show where the locking tabs are, but that can be figured out. The new belt will be tight and take some strength, agility and nimble fingers to reinstall, but is otherwise a relatively easy process. Just don't get your fingers between the brush and the sharp plastic surrounding it. Like I did.
With its new belt, the machine seems to perform very well. No more stalling of the beater brush. Embarrassing how much dirt the thing is picking up. The clear dirt cup shows it for all to see - so vacuum alone! The dirty/clean light, which initially I thought it a silly frill, is actually quite helpful and interesting to watch. Overall, I am very satisfied with this cleaner and my "purchase." This model appears to be discontinued, but based on this experience, I would not hesitate to purchase a similar Bissell product, especially given the bargain prices.
Suggestions:
- It comes with a nice very long cord but I find if I do not unwind it completely and throw it behind me, I get tangled up in it because of its mounting position.
- Rated at 12 amps which draws a lot of power, so plug into an outlet not otherwise in use.
- Frequent cleaning of ALL the filters and dirt cup, like any other vacuum, is very important and easy to overlook. Hair does get tangled up in the beater brush, and that is tedious to pick out.
- When washing the filters and cup, let it air dry overnight before reassembling.
- The belt must be periodically replaced and doing so is easy and inexpensive. Doing so will dramatically improve performance. |

Awful Awful Awful. I hate this vacuum because after we purchased it we found that everything that was suctioned up got wedged into the filter and you have to pull down the dirt and hair. It completely is useless to have a HEPA filter if you have to do this. Its a mess. In addition, when we turn it on dust blows out the front of the vacuum and also dust collects behind the dirt container/cup.
It does not contain the dirt and dust whatsoever. I bought this because I have asthma. It serves no purpose and makes my asthma worse. It is more of a hazard.
In addition, the materials are cheap. One day we clicked the foot button to release the vacuum from its upright position and it just broke off. So now we have a vacuum that will not stand upright unless you lean it against a wall.
I emailed customer service and they told me to call a service tech to come out and fix it. Yeah right. Like I am going to pay for someone to fix something that should not have broken with gentle use. They made it they should fix it for free.
Bissell products SUCK. I will never purchase another product from them as they do not stick by their products and workmanship. They want you to fix what you buy or repurchase when one breaks when it is a result of poor construction.

Don't buy for pet hair!

| This vacuum has good suction and decent attachments. However, if you are going to be sweeping up pet hair then do yourself a big favor and don't buy this vacuum. The hair, along with most of the other waste gets caught in the upper part of the chamber. In order to remove it, you have to reach into there with your hands and physically remove the filth. This is tedious, disgusting & unsanitary and totally defeats the purpose of a bagless vacuum. |

| This vacuum is a great deal for the price. It is bagless and has many different filters. It picks up great and is easy to clean up. |

| it does pick up, but now after few years, it is not picking up as well, plus the filtration system sucks. Will be going back to bag sweeper next time I buy. |
